Home  /  Sell NVMe SSDs

Sell your NVMe SSDs.

U.2 and U.3 from 1.92TB to 15.36TB, and enterprise M.2. NVMe holds its value better than anything else on this site, so it is worth listing properly rather than lumping it in with the rest of the pallet.

Your list is on its way

Our buying team will come back with an offer, usually within one working day.

Why NVMe holds its price

Two reasons, and they compound. The first is that demand did not stop when your drives came out of service — the same models are still going into builds today, and the used market is competing with a new-part price that has not collapsed. The second is that NVMe supply into the second-hand market is still thin compared to SAS, because the installed base is younger and less of it has reached the end of its first life.

The practical effect is that a 3.84TB NVMe U.2 is worth appreciably more than a 3.84TB SAS SSD of similar age and endurance, and both are worth many times a 3.84TB spinning drive. If your clearance is mixed, the NVMe is where most of the money is, and it is the part most often thrown into a pallet without being counted.

Endurance is the variable that moves the number

Capacity sets the ballpark; remaining write life decides where in it you land. Every enterprise NVMe drive reports how much of its rated endurance it has used, and we read that on arrival with everything else.

This matters more on NVMe than anywhere else because NVMe usually sat in the hottest tier. A drive that spent four years as a cache or a database volume can be most of the way through its rated writes while looking physically new. Meanwhile a read-intensive drive from a content tier may be at 5% used after the same four years, and is worth close to what a lightly used one would be.

You do not need to check before you send the list. But if you already know which workload a batch came off, saying so in the notes gets you a tighter first number instead of a wide range that has to be narrowed after inspection.

Mixed lists and things not on the list

The list covers what turns up most often, not everything we buy. Add-in card NVMe, E1.S and E3.S rulers, vendor-specific carriers and anything unusual should go in the notes with the model number and we will price it by hand.

The one hard limit is the same across the site: 1TB and over. Below that the resale value is under the cost of collecting, testing and listing the drive, so any offer would come out at nothing and waste your time.

02 / QUESTIONS

Questions we get asked

Do you buy consumer M.2 drives, like a Samsung 980 or a WD Black?

In volume, and only 1TB and above. One or two are not worth the postage to either of us. If you have twenty or more out of a laptop fleet or a workstation refresh, put them against the consumer M.2 line and tell us the models in the notes.

What is the difference between U.2 and U.3 to you?

Very little on price at the same capacity and endurance. U.3 is slightly easier to place because it drops into tri-mode backplanes, but the capacity and the remaining write life matter far more than which of the two it is.

Do you buy M.2 in the 22110 length as well as 2280?

Yes. 22110 is the longer enterprise format with power-loss protection and it is genuinely worth more than a 2280 consumer drive of the same capacity, so it is worth saying which you have.

My NVMe drives came out of a Dell or HPE server — does the firmware matter?

It can. Some vendor-locked drives will only run at full speed in their own hardware, which narrows who we can sell them to. It does not stop us buying them; it just means we price them as vendor drives rather than generic ones. Tell us in the notes and there are no surprises later.

How do you check endurance?

From SMART, on arrival. Enterprise NVMe reports percentage life used, and it is the single biggest variable on a drive that is otherwise identical to the one next to it. A read-intensive 3.84TB with 90% of its life left and one with 20% are different products.

Do you buy add-in card NVMe, the ones that look like a graphics card?

Yes, though they turn up rarely enough that they are not on the list. Put the model in the notes — HHHL AIC drives from Intel, Samsung and Micron all have a market.
