What actually moves the number

People expect age to decide it. It matters far less than capacity, interface and quantity — and quantity matters more than almost anyone expects.

Capacity

The single biggest factor, and the reason for the 1TB floor. A four-year-old 3.84TB SAS SSD comfortably beats a newer 480GB one.

Interface

NVMe over SAS over SATA, roughly, at the same capacity. U.2 and U.3 carry a clear premium.

Endurance left

Readable from SMART, and we do read it. An SSD with most of its write life remaining is worth appreciably more than one that has been hammered.

Matched quantity

Forty identical drives are worth more each than four. Forty sell as a lot; four sit on a shelf one at a time.

Caddies and trays

Small individually, genuinely additive across a batch. Leave the drives in them.

Age

Matters far less than people expect. It only really bites once a model is out of firmware support.

About the data on them

Every drive is wiped when it reaches us, before it is tested and long before it is sold. Wipe them yourself first if your policy requires it — it does not change the offer. The one thing that does cost you money is stripping drives out of servers and throwing the caddies away before you sell.

Questions we get asked

Do you buy hard drives under 1TB?

No. Below 1TB the resale value is lower than the cost of collecting, testing and listing the drive, so any offer would come out at nothing and waste your time. If a pallet is mixed and some smaller drives are in it, send the whole list anyway — we will price what is worth pricing and be straight with you about the rest.

What happens to the data on them?

Drives are wiped on arrival, before anything is tested or resold. You are welcome to wipe them yourself first if your own policy requires it — it makes no difference to the offer. What does cost you money is pulling drives out of servers and losing the caddies.

Do I need to take the drives out of the servers?

No, and we would rather you did not. A drive still in its caddy is worth more than a bare drive, because caddies are irritating to source and we would otherwise have to buy them.

My drives are not on the list — can you still buy them?

Usually yes. The list covers what turns up most often, not everything we will buy. Put the models in the notes box and we will price them by hand.

What if some of them are dead?

Tell us roughly how many and we will price on that basis. A handful of failures in a large batch is normal and does not change much. We would rather know up front than discover it at testing and have to revise the offer.

How is the final number decided?

Capacity, interface, form factor, endurance remaining on SSDs, and how many of the same model you have. Quantity genuinely matters: forty identical 1.92TB SAS SSDs are worth more each than four, because forty sell as a lot.

How quickly do you pay?

Once the drives arrive and match the list, payment goes out by bank transfer. Collection is arranged and paid for by us on anything of reasonable size.
